Classification

• Identify the correct hazard class and division.
• Determine the UN/NA identification number.
• Assign the proper shipping name from the Hazardous Materials Table (49 CFR 172.101).
• Determine the packing group (I, II, III).

Packaging

• Select authorized packaging per 49 CFR Parts 173, 178, or 179.
• Use performance packaging if required (UN/DOT specification).
• Follow manufacturer’s closure instructions exactly.
• Ensure packaging integrity and compatibility with the material.

Marking

• Mark packages with proper shipping name, UN/NA number, shipper and consignee name and address
• Ensure markings are durable, legible, and in English.

Labeling

• Affix hazard class labels near the shipping name, ensuring labels are unobscured and in good condition.
• Apply multiple labels if required.

Shipping Papers

• Prepare shipping papers with proper shipping name, hazard class/division, UN/NA number, packing group, quantity and type of packaging
• Include emergency response information and phone number.
• Sign the shipper’s certification statement.
• Shipping papers packet will include driver’s instructions and detailed information regarding each module contained within the shipment

Placarding

• Provide placards for bulk shipments or as required by quantity thresholds.
• Ensure placards match the hazard class and are in good condition.

Training

• Ensure all hazmat employees are trained per 49 CFR 172 Subpart H.
• Maintain training records for each employee.

Documentation Retention

• Retain closure instructions and manufacturer’s notifications for packaging.
• Keep copies of shipping papers and certifications as required.
