Overview

Under direct supervision of a Qualified Sr. Radiation Protection Technician. Performs
Decontamination Technician job functions as assigned by management. Typical job responsibilities assist and support management in ensuring that all Radiation Safety duties are conducted in a manner that is safe, cost effective and fully compliant with VNSFS procedures and all contractual, statutory, and regulatory requirements. This position is part of the Radiological Protection Team and is responsible for providing support for the radiation protection program to meet the project mission. The specific work assignment may include duties or activities that assist and support management in one or more of the following functional areas, in addition to other duties as assigned:

Responsibilities

• Provide support to the radiation protection program to include contamination control,
housekeeping, and decontamination; waste and respiratory protection equipment removal and
decontamination of equipment and facility surfaces; radioactive material accountability.
• Provide support to the personnel and coordinate work requirements in the Radiological Controlled Area (RCA) with the Operations, Engineering, and Waste Packaging processes “In Accordance With” (IAW) the Radiation Protection Plan.
• Perform all work task IAW VNSFS procedures and policies to ensure compliance with the radiation and Quality Assurance Plans.
• Performs walkdowns of the project areas to verify radiation protection program implementation and ensure compliance of the program.
• Participates in and fosters a work environment based upon openness, trust, communication,
teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction.
• Ensure all training needed to perform project tasks that you are qualified commensurate with assigned duties and responsibilities.
• Ensure radiation hazards and hazard controls are identified during work planning and development of hazard analyses/controls for each task.
• Ensure tools, and materials necessary for task execution are available.
• Ensure personnel participate in a readiness demonstration prior to performing a task.
• Ensure work area inspections are performed prior to the start of work and periodically through execution.
• Ensure radiation safety records are generated and retained in accordance with the radiation
protection plan as required by your task.
• Ensure program performance issues are identified, corrected, and communicated.


Accountabilities:
• Some flexibility in hours is allowed, but the employee must be available during their “core”
work hours. Overtime may be required as job demands.

 

Work Environment:
This job operates in a field project environment. This role routinely uses standard office
equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.


Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Qualifications

Education & Certifications:
• High School Diploma/GED
• Must be able to pass Radiation Worker Training (Radiological Worker 1 or 2) and 40-hour HAZWOPER training and up to date 8-Hour HAZWOPER Refresher training.

 

Experience & Requirements:
• Prior experience preferred in performing rad safety, safety, and occupational health work at
hazardous, toxic, and radioactive waste sites, facility demolition and deconstruction projects, or other projects with similar hazards.
• Demonstrated completion of specialty training including, but not limited to:
• Shielding
• Respiratory protection
• Working knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local occupational safety and health
regulations.


Travel: 75%


Other Duties:
• Responsible for the requirements set forth in the NQA-1 and/or ISO 9001-2105 QA Plans.
