  • Overview


    The Organic Chemist, is responsible for all areas of organic chemistry analyses of client samples. It focuses on providing technical competency, capability, capacity, and effective resource utilization while providing necessary quality and quantity for organic chemistry sample analyses. Assist the WHL Organic FLM in the leadership and direction of the activities of the WHL Organic Chemistry group. Provide technical guidance within WHL Organic Chemistry, providing assistance to less experienced scientists, laboratory technicians, and other organizations within Analytical Chemistry. Initiate programs to improve work processes.


    In accordance with ISMS and the QAPD, laboratory leadership has ultimate responsibility for providing a safe working environment for their staff and for compliance and quality of products.


    Essential Functions

    • Assist the WHL Organic FLM in the leadership and direction of the activities of the WHL Organics Department.
    • Responsible for the timely delivery of analytical results from assigned department to the Project Management department.
    • Works with other chemists/scientists/ chemical technologists and the Project Management Department to effectively plan, organize, and manage the activities in assigned areas to meet laboratory and client schedules (includes scheduling staff for bench work, data review, etc.).
    • Provide technical guidance within the subject matter area, providing assistance to less experienced scientists, laboratory technicians, and other organizations within Analytical Chemistry and analytical services. Initiate programs to improve work processes. Ensure that any identified bottlenecks to analytical production are brought up with the WHL Operations Manager and the Project Management department immediately.
    • Function as the technical authority for assigned methods and procedures, including person‑in‑charge functions, and configuration control authority. Ensure compliance of the work area and assigned methods to policy and procedural requirements.
    • Obtain competency to review analytical data for analyses within the assigned department. Act as back-up for data review within the department to ensure that single points of failure are eliminated.
    • Reinforce ISMS, VPP, EMS, HPI, and Conduct of Operations processes, values, and behaviors in work performed in the radiochemistry group.

    Supervisory Responsibility

    • Provide leadership and motivation in directing analytical activities for bench level technicians
    • Mentor the activities of junior chemists and chemical technologists, including training and oversight of analytical activities and production.

    Work Environment

    This job operates in a professional office environment, however requires direct participation with activities in a Category III Nuclear facility. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.


    Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

    Some flexibility in hours is allowed, but the employee must be available during their “core” work hours. Overtime may be required as job demands.






    Required Education and Experience

    Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or related science

    Experience in an accredited analytical laboratory


    Preferred Education and Experience

    Advanced degree in chemistry

    Preferred experience in method development for organic and semi volatile organic compounds by GCMS
